Motion to reject Golf Club petition defeated
At the last “working meeting” of the SLOA Board of Directors, the issue of the Sunland Golf and Country Club petition was raised. During that process, Board Member Eldon Dennis made a motion to reject the Golf Club petition on the grounds that to accept it would be to violate various limitations imposed by the SLOA governing documents. The motion was seconded by Dan Failoni. After a short discussion, a vote was taken, and the motion was defeated 7 to 3 with the 7 nay votes all being cast by the members of the SLOA Board who are also members of the Golf Club. Gary Fortmann joined Eldon and Dan in support of the motion.
According to the SLOA BOD, the Golf Club Petition is the only petition they have received in the 11 years since SLOA was founded. This meeting is to be held at the Gathering Place on Thursday February 4, 2010 at 9:00AM. Public commentary is invited: the public will be allowed 20 minutes at the beginning of the meeting in which to comment on the subject at hand, each speaker will be allowed a maximum of 5 minutes.
Sunland-Facts has posted a printable copy of a proxy form that can be used to vote against any form of support for the golf course. Click here for explanatory page and a here for a link to the proxy form.
SLOA BOARD asked to reject Golf Course Request for Homeowner subsidy. There are at least 13 reasons why the SLOA Board should not even consider the petition, let alone spend the time, effort and our money to conduct a vote. Click Here to read the letter.

WHAT IS THE REAL PLAN OF THE GOLF CLUB???
July 21 2009 SLGCC Presentation to SLOA Board. On July 21, 2009, the SLGCC Board made a presentation to the SLOA Board describing the SLGCC problems and some possible solutions. The last slide suggests a merger between SLOA and the SLGCC with the possibility of including the Water District as well. Here is a link to that last slide note the last paragraph.
For those who are curious, here is a link to see the full presentation.
Who is being adversely affected by the SLGCC proposal?
Last night, I got a call from a woman in Sunland about what she had been told by a Golf Club member when she told the member that she could not afford to pay the $300 per year. The response was, “Then we will just put a lien on your property and make it very hard to sell.”
Last week, I got a call from someone else who was told, “If you cannot afford the $300, then you shouldn’t be living in Sunland.”
An email from another woman said that she was told, “If $300 is to much for you then you should sell your house and move.”
When I reported the comments made to me when I first arrived in Sunland on the “MY STORY” page of the “SLOA JUST SAY NO” web site click here, I received emails from a number of people who told me I must have misunderstood the person I was talking to. I did not misunderstand him, what I reported were his exact words.
Where do these people get their arrogance and what gives them the right to ride roughshod over others? What gives them the right to tell people, “If you cannot afford $300, you cannot afford to live in Sunland?” What gives them the right to demand that 855 homeowners contribute $300 each to preserve the golf course which is only used by about 120 golfers who live in Sunland? What gives them the right to use scare tactics to force people who do not know better to conform to their wishes?
I have no doubt that there are some very nice people who belong to SLGCC so why don’t they step up and censure those who are giving the whole club a very bad name.
Since I posted this, I have been asked by a couple of people to provide names of the people whose experiences I have cited above. Sorry, folks, you are just going to have to take my word for it as I do not think it would be a good idea to reveal the names. I feel I have to protect the identities of the people involved. I refuse to risk exposing them to further harassment. Here is a comment from someone who does not fear to be public
Several of my friends are widows and live on fixed incomes. They are just one step away from being unable to make their monthly payments, etc. They are now worried that they will be forced to move and put their homes up for sale. Now is this an example of the “good neighbor” attitude we hear so much about in Sunland? Why do the golfers want to cause me to have to sell my property and move? It’s very upsetting for older people to have to make such decisions! I fear that an assessment will only make it more difficult to sell my property. I’m selecting Option 4 on the survey sheet and encourage others to do the same.

More on the subject:
Good letter.
I hope the SLOA Board reads it carefully and gives it serious consideration.
Other homeowners should add their voices to urge the SLOA Board to keep their noses and our money out of this golf course situation.

I’m really glad to see this issue of merger finally being brought to everyone’s attention. I submitted the following to SLOA JUST SAY NO in early November, but it didn’t seem to register with folks as I had hoped.
“This is all part of a VERY long standing attempt by the golf club to MERGE SLOA and SLG&CC so they can keep their cost down!”
The idea merging the two entities has been a long standing goal of the SLG&CC leadership. This assessment for five years is just the “foot in the door” – next comes -”see that wasn’t so bad, now we might as well go ahead and merge the two”!
